Before anything else, it's essential to know where you stand. Taking a diagnostic test is like mapping out your SAT journey. We would recommend using College Board's BlueBook app and taking the practice PSAT for an accurate baseline. Using 3rd party diagnostics are unfortunately unreliable - not only are the questions often not on par with official questions, but no one has truly drilled down on the adaptive scoring algorithm the SAT uses. If you already have a score report from a previous digital SAT or an official PSAT, you can use that instead of taking a diagnostic to identify your strengths and areas for improvement. This insight is vital for a targeted and effective study plan.
Tip #2: Zero in on Weak Areas
Once you know your weak spots, it's time to tackle them head-on. Practice those tricky concepts using resources like the College Board's question bank or the Preptly app. Understanding mistakes is key to not repeating them. This means taking time out to read the answer explanations and figure out where you went wrong. Otherwise, history is bound to repeat itself. Think of each practice session in two parts: (1) attempting the problem and (2) reflecting on the problem and learning from your mistakes. Both components are necessary to land your goal math score.

Working Backwards — For problems with defined answer choices, try plugging them back into the question. This is especially effective for integer-based word problems.
Nice Numbers — When faced with abstract problems, replace variables with simple numbers to make the problem more tangible and solvable. Using small numbers like 2 and 3 work really well for most problems like this. Of course, when dealing with percents, the best number to work with is 100.
Drawing a Picture — Visual representation can be a game-changer, especially for geometry problems. Sketching can provide clarity and a new perspective on the problem. The 15-20 seconds it takes to draw a picture is well worth it, especially when you have 1.5 minutes per question at your disposal.
Guessing a Middle Number — If you're stuck, choosing a middle number from the options can increase your chances of selecting the correct answer. Outliers are typically never correct when given a range of numbers to choose from.
Majority Rules — When guessing, look for commonalities among the answer choices. This can provide hints towards the correct answer.
Tip #5: Maximize the Potential of the Desmos Calculator
The Desmos calculator is more than just a graphing tool; it's a critical asset in tackling the SAT Math section. This advanced calculator, available during the test, can be a game-changer, especially for complex problems. Take full-length timed practice tests to improve your pacing and build up your test-taking stamina. It’s not just about answering correctly; it’s about doing it efficiently.
Bonus Tip: Double-Check Your Work
Aiming for that perfect score? Make sure to bank enough time to go back and redo all the problems again. This is hands down the best way to catch and correct any careless errors. I personally could not break a 780 math score until implemented this strategy. I finally scored a perfect 800 in math last March.
