The December SAT has wrapped up, and if you or someone you know took the test, congratulations on making it through! I know how much time, effort, and energy goes into preparing for a test like this. To give you a better understanding of what to expect moving forward, I sat down with one of our incredible tutors, Puneet, who recently took the December SAT herself. Here are the top takeaways and actionable advice for anyone prepping for future tests like March 2025 or beyond!

1. How Did the December SAT Compare?
One of the biggest questions we often get is how each test differs. SAT difficulty can change from month to month, with some tests featuring challenging math sections and others putting more emphasis on tough reading or writing passages.
This December, Puneet noted that the English section was harder for her, particularly the inference and command of evidence questions, while the math felt more predictable and straightforward.
Interestingly, she took the international version of the test, which is slightly different from the U.S. version. Her U.S.-based students found the math more difficult this time, while the English felt easier. This variation underscores how test experiences can differ even within the same testing month.
2. Preparation Strategies That Work
One of the key takeaways from our conversation was the importance of preparation and strategy. Here’s what worked for Puneet:
Start Smart: Beginning the English section at question number 15 is one of our go-to strategies, and it worked well for her. This allows you to tackle questions that align better with your strengths before diving into tougher reading passages.
Focus on Patterns: For math, mastering core concepts like geometry, algebra, and exponents is essential. The College Board’s Question Bank is a must-use resource—it’s the foundation for everything you’ll see on the test.
Leverage Technology: Tools like Desmos can be a game-changer for math, helping to check work and save time, especially on longer calculations.
3. Unexpected Test Elements
Every SAT seems to throw in a few surprises, and the December test was no exception. For math, Puneet noticed an increase in exponents questions, which are not always heavily tested. Geometry also stood out, with some questions deviating from the simpler patterns typically found in the Question Bank.
On the English side, she found that while many grammar questions followed predictable patterns, a few were designed to test more nuanced concepts. These moments are a reminder that strong preparation includes not only mastering strategies but also being ready to adapt when questions feel unfamiliar.
4. Mental and Physical Test Prep
Beyond mastering the content, preparing mentally and physically for the SAT is crucial. Puneet recommends arriving early on test day to settle into the environment and take a few deep breaths before starting. Doing a short warm-up—like five quick math and English questions—can help jumpstart your brain and set the tone for success.
5. Resources for the March 2025 SAT
Looking ahead to the March SAT, preparation is key. Puneet recommends focusing on two areas:
Math: Build a solid foundation, especially in harder topics like geometry, regression problems, and exponents.
English: Strengthen your understanding of grammar rules and develop flexible strategies for tackling different reading questions.
6. The Importance of Practice Tests
One thing Puneet and I both agree on is the value of full-length practice tests. Whether it’s working through all 6 Blue Book Practice Tests or exploring alternative resources when those are completed, consistent practice builds confidence and familiarity with the test format.
Bottom Line
Taking the SAT is an experience that challenges both academic knowledge and mental stamina. Whether you’re planning for the March 2025 test or preparing for a later date, the key is to stay consistent, focus on the fundamentals, and use reliable resources.
